As you can see, the controversy of whether or not to allow human trials for mitochondrial replacement is much more complicated that a two-sided debate. It is a controversy centered in scientific, ethical, social, and political spheres that cannot be answered without looking at all the intertwining aspects. Our Voter’s Guide to Prop 44 offered an entryway into the crowded stage of mitochondrial replacement. Although it is easy to get drawn into the pull of scientific technology and promising advances, we urge our voters to be responsible and think of the subsequent effects these technologies will have in our society. Science is no longer stuck in its ivory tower. Rather, it is an active participant in the lives of every individual.
